Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition

The best RPG of this generation just got better

Strengths: Free form experience, tons of varied quests, huge land to explore, excellent graphics and sound, expanded content

Weakness: Leveling system can be kooky at times, no downloadable content available, takes up 5GB of hard drive space, a lot of load times

Oblivion was released earlier this year on PS3 after much delay only to get an upgrade this month with the Game of the Year Edition. It's pretty much the exact same game as before but with the Shivering Isles expansion included (which is estimated to have as much content as a third of the original game). PS3 users are unable to download extra content so if you want more Oblivion, this is the only option right now.

Oblivion has a main quest but there are so many side quests, you could spend dozens of hours doing them before tackling the main quest. Unlike other games, the side quests in Oblivion are actually interesting, and at times, extremely long. The outdoor lands are extremely large and beautifully detailed, the graphics support up to 720P, and full surround sound. All characters have audible voices as well. It's just a massive, fun game.

There are some negatives, though. The leveling system increases your stats based on how often you use them. It makes logical sense but it can be frustrating leveling up different stats or abilities. Additionally, the PS3 version still has no downloadable content, which makes it a loser in this department compared to the Xbox 360 or the PC. However, it looks a bit nicer and loads a bit faster compared to the X360, and a PS3 costs much less than a good PC capable of running Oblivion in all its glory. While you play the game, it caches itself to the PS3 hard drive, taking up to a maximum of 5GB. And, almost every time you enter or exit a building or town, expect it to pause to load the environment.

Regardless, it is an excellent RPG and its positives far outweigh its negatives. Buy it!

Expansive world which is as close to being alive as I have seen

Strengths: HUGE world, Interaction with ANYONE that's actually varied, joining different factions is fun, gaining experience is fun.

Weakness: Some bugs have been reported(especially for the Game of the Year version), learning curve is fairly high, menu System is confusing, little explanation of items or meanings of effects.

The game is all what you make of it. You can choose to explore; To learn about people; To influence them; To help people; To hurt them. It's really all up to you. The game gives you that freedom. However, this brings me to my point that this game is what you make of it. If you choose to not want to explore the side quests or advancing your characters abilities, you'll likely get bored quickly and want to move on to something with a more forced storyline.

I should make note here that I discovered via searching that there appears to be a "vampire" bug in this game of the year version. This will cause you to not be able to cure yourself should you become a vampire. Noting this, I am making sure to save fairly often and in various save files so I always have something to fall back on should this happen.

Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition (PS3)

Strengths: Graphics and story line.

Weakness: some slow spots.

I would highly reccomend this game to anybody that enjoys OBlivion to get this version. The added previous and continued storyline will add to the enjoyment and understanding of the game.
